Frequently Asked Questions

How do I place an order?

Orders can be placed via WhatsApp on 066 275 6912 or email at eat@homemademeals.co.za.

Which payment methods can I use?
Orders placed via Whatsapp and email can be paid through SnapScan, Zapper or the Netcash payment gateways, all of which are private and secure.
If collecting at one of our two distribution centres, card payments with SnapScan, Zapper and Yoco are available.
No cash-on-delivery payments are accepted.

Do you offer a delivery service?
Yes, we do for orders over R600 at a minimal delivery fee.

Where do you deliver?
We currently deliver in Somerset West, Strand, Gordon’s Bay, Brackenfell, Kuilsriver, Durbanville, Belville and Kraaifontein.

What are your delivery charges?
Free delivery is applicable for orders over R2,000.00
The following delivery charges apply:
* Within 1-5km – Free
* 5-10km – R50
* 11-20km – R75

When will my order be delivered?
Deliveries take place from Monday to Friday between 11am and 7pm, and on Saturdays from 11am to 5pm. No deliveries will be made on Sundays or public holidays.
We will do our best to satisfy your scheduling requests, but we cannot guarantee a specific delivery time.
Please ensure that you or someone you trust is available to receive your order.

Will my order arrive frozen?
Yes, your order will arrive frozen. Maintaining the cold chain from our distribution center to your front door is our priority.

What do I do with my order once received?
Be sure to check that all items ordered have been delivered and place them in your freezer immediately.

Will items that are out of stock affect my delivery time?
We aim to never be out of any stock, but in the rare instance it happens, it may delay your order by up to seven days. This will always be communicated to you.

What if one or more of my items arrives defrosted?
This should not happen, but in the unlikely event that it does, store it in the refrigerator and consume within 48 hours.

What do I do if I did not receive my order or an item is missing?
Please contact us immediately on Whatsapp or email with your order number and query, and we will investigate and get back to you as soon as possible.

Are your meals halaal or kosher?
Unfortunately, our meals are neither halaal nor kosher.

Do you have vegetarian or vegan options available?
Yes we do. Please refer to our menu for a list of dishes and sides available.

Do you have gluten-free dishes?
The majority of our main dishes are gluten-free, but please refer to our menu for specifically gluten-free dishes.

How often does your menu change?
We offer an extensive menu and new dishes are added continuously.

Are your portions big enough for more than one person?
Most of our main meal portions are 300g and that is without a side dish. When adding a side, our meals can definitely feed two people. Our portion sizes are designed to be sufficient for a grown adult and can be shared among two smaller children.

How long can I store my meals in the freezer?
Freezing is a healthy option for natural food preservation, and frozen meals can easily be stored for up to six months with minimal flavour and nutritional loss. Thereafter they won’t be in their peak quality period and taste and texture will tend to deteriorate.
At The Glass Castle Food Studio, we do not put preservatives in any of our meals and they are all frozen in their peak condition.

What is the best way to defrost my food?
The best and safest way to defrost your meals is to place them in the refrigerator to defrost. Then you can simply follow the detailed heating instructions provided on the packaging of each dish.
We recommend heating items in a pan on the stove or in the oven, but some of them can be heated in the microwave as well.

Can I heat my meals from frozen?
Yes, you absolutely can, but personally we do not recommend it. We find that this process is not optimal for maintaining the integrity of our hand-crafted meals.

How long does it take to heat my food?
Each dish comes with suggested heating times and depend on whether you are heating it from frozen or defrosted it first.

Do you offer a range for children?
We currently have a small range for kids available and will be looking into extending it in the near future.

Do you offer any desserts?
Yes, we do have a small dessert offering and will grow this range as the company grows.

Is your packaging microwave/oven safe?
Our foil containers are both safe for oven and microwave use.
Our plastic containers are only microwave safe, and we recommend decanting these meals into an oven-proof dish for heating in the oven to thicken their consistency again. Alternatively, you can also do it in a pan on the stove.

Can I recycle the containers?
Every item of our packaging can and should be recycled. We recommend rinsing the containers under water before putting them in your recycling bag.

Is my food still okay if there are ice crystals on top?
Yes. Ice crystals form during the cooling process as condensation sets in because of different temperatures in the containers and freezer. The food is still perfectly safe and edible.

Can I refreeze my food after I have defrosted it?
This is not recommended, especially if you have left food out to defrost at room temperature. After defrosting, store in the refrigerator and consume within 48 hours.
